Dehumidifying Egg

Dehumidifying Egg

The dehumidifying egg is one of the more charming options currently available on the market. Cute construction, an array of colors, and a whimsical design concept make it easy to imagine this dehumidification device in a child’s bedroom, closet, or play area. Unfortunately, the design is this product’s biggest selling point.

Appearance and Design

As mentioned above, the dehumidifying egg’s design is charming and accessible. It is manufactured from smooth white ceramic on a streamlined blue and white plastic base; the “egg” shape fits into the base as a cup would fit into a cup holder, and prevents the ceramic component from rolling away or breaking. Silica beads inside the egg absorb ambient moisture, and turn pink when the system requires changing. To refresh the beads, simply pop the egg in a microwave until the beads have lost their color!

Functionality and Use

This product will never be capable of replication the moisture reduction achieved by a mechanical dehumidifier, but there are some advantages associated with the passive silica-based technology. The dehumidifying egg works similarly to a preservation packet slipped into a jar of vitamins or supplements; moisture particles are drawn to and absorbed by the silica rather than clinging to other objects. This won’t do much to change the quality of the air within a large space such as a bedroom, but may have some effect within the confines of a closet or sock drawer. Silica is silent and odorless, and the egg is a convenient size and shape.

Model Limitations

On a certain level, the common sense of the dehumidifying egg must be questioned. When the silica beads are saturated, the manufacturer instructions are to pop it into a microwave . . . and evaporate the collected moisture. Where does the evaporated moisture go? Right back into the air from which it came! This begs the question, why bother to use it in the first place? However, if the microwave is located in a different room from the egg’s usual position, there may be some minimal dehumidification benefit over time.

Customer Service and Warranty

The dehumidifying egg is a sturdy, inexpensive product that retails for about $15, and does not come with a manufacturer’s warranty. Most customers were fairly satisfied with their purchase, and did not report a particularly short lifespan for the dehumidifying egg. In general inexpensive products such as this one are easier to replace by simply purchasing another when the first breaks; manufacturer warranties can be quite a hassle, and are only worthwhile when a significant amount of money is involved.

What Do Owners Say?

Buyers found that this was a fun, attractive gift to give at baby showers and similar events. Some people placed the dehumidifying egg inside their cars, while others popped it into musty, moldy closets and crawl spaces. While it has limited dehumidification properties, there is something to be said for the odor-eliminating properties of the egg’s design. It may be more useful as an air freshener than as anything else, especially for those with fragrance allergies.

If you’re looking for a cute product and don’t need much by way of actual dehumidification, the dehumidifying egg may be a perfect price-conscious choice for your home!
