EdgeStar 74-Pint Dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers make a home or other space more comfortable, healthy and prevent moisture damage to the structure. Some dehumidifiers are made for smaller areas, but if the area which needs to be dried out is up to 4,000 square feet the EdgeStar 74-Pint Dehumidifier is the one to choose. This dehumidifier has a large capacity, loads of features, and is priced very reasonably.

Larger Capacity for Larger Areas

The EdgeStar 74-Pint Dehumidifier is billed as the best dehumidifier with a larger capacity which is available on the residential market. It owes much of its power to its specially-designed compressor and fan motor, which gives it the strength to dry out 4,000 square feet. It is powerful enough for the dankest, dampest basements. If the user chooses to only use the water bucket they have a capacity of 21 pints, but using the continuous-drain feature the unit will hold up to 74 pints.

Easy and Convenient

This dehumidifier performs well in temperatures as low as 44 F and has an automatic de-icer for the condenser coils, automatic shut-off when the bucket capacity is reached, and auto-restart if power if lost for a period of time. The humidistat display is a digital readout and allows the user to program the EdgeStar for a range of humidity levels. Once the air has reached the desired percentage of humidity the unit switches off, saving electricity. Although at 42 pounds it is a bit heavier than some others, it is still maneuverable on caster wheels and an easy-grip handle.

Features

Besides its capacity this EdgeStar dehumidifier has several excellent features. It has a washable air filter to help screen out allergens and other dangerous materials from the de-humidified air, but it also has the option of a silver ion filter for even greater air purity. Although the compressor is high-powered the fans are very quiet when in motion, generating a decibel level of only 58.5. This is also one of the only large-capacity residential dehumidifiers which have received the EnergyStar rating for using non-CFC coolant and energy efficiency.

Set-Up and Helpful Hints

When the user sets up the dehumidifier for the first time they should not tilt it when removing it from the box and allow the unit to sit for 24 hours prior to switching it on, so the coolant can settle. The EdgeStar dehumidifier does have an auto-restart function, so it is best to plug it directly into the wall instead of a surge-suppressor to take advantage of that feature. If the unit is to be used in a basement or other area where the owner might not check on it every few hours it should be put into continuous-draining mode. This works best when it is elevated to about 4 feet above floor level.

The majority of customer feedback on this model of EdgeStar dehumidifier was positive. Many purchasers found it worked best in a basement or cellar and that it had amazing power, removing as much as 6 gallons of water from the air in the first few days of use. This normally levels off after a few weeks, since the residual moisture from tie time prior to its purchase has since been removed. Other users praised its quiet operation and the convenient auto-stop and auto-restart functions.
