Industrial Dehumidifiers
Be prepared to spend a bit of money if you are looking for an industrial dehumidifier. However, if you shop around a bit, you still can find a good deal even though you should be prepared to easily spend $500-$4000 depending on the quality and dehumidification power. With the internet now selling industrial dehumidifiers with free shipping costs you may be able to save money compared to stores that generally only sell heavy machinery because you are going to be hard pressed to find an industrial dehumidifier anywhere other than the internet or a heavy duty machine store. The local hardware store is not going to give a very large selection comparatively speaking unless you are willing to downgrade yourself to a home dehumidifier which may be a viable option as they have home dehumidifiers that are up to 70-pints. However, places like Home Depot or Lowes often have industrial dehumidifiers for rent, but rarely have them for sale. The other problem with purchasing a dehumidifier at a hardware store is that you will have to pay a very large premium for these products because they are not getting the bulk discount like a wholesaler of dehumidifiers would so you are not going to see the Walmart like selection or pricing structure. The other option is to contact the manufacturer directly, but this can be a pain because they generally want you to either drive to pick it up or pay hundreds of dollars to have it shipped via UPS or Fedex. Because you are only buying one or two dehumidifiers, they are going to charge you way more than their wholesalers. But even if you are going to buy your dehumidifier at an actual store, shop around on the internet first to make sure you are getting a good deal. Generally an industrial dehumidifier is not something that you go into a store and pick up for the first time. You should see how other users liked the product before picking it up.
Industrial dehumidifiers are a bit more complicated than a home dehumidifier. For small houses you can get away with emptying a tank every few days, but for an industrial dehumidifier you are really going to want to get a pump to pump that water outside. Most dehumidifiers that are industrial strength are going to come with one of these pumps, but you need to make sure you understand what kind of fitting you will be expecting for the pump. It will make a very big difference in the type of drainage system that you need within your building. This is not just going to be your average home dehumidifier that can run the hose directly into a basement sink. You need to make sure you have a proper drain to handle the amount of water that may be coming out of the dehumidifier. You need to check the manufacturers recommended drainage specs before you make your purchase. It is even possible that you may be limited in the size of a dehumidifier that you can purchase especially if you are in building that has concrete walls and poor drainage. Dehumidifiers with buckets larger than 100-pints generally are going to be very heavy for the average person to lift so most industrial dehumidifiers are not going to come with incredibly large buckets. We have seen some companies route the hose directly into a 100-pint bucket from the hose coming from the dehumidifier and then manually empty it every 8 hours, but this method is not recommended as the bucket will overflow if someone forgets to empty it.
Make sure that you are looking at the square foot coverage when looking for a dehumidifier. Make sure you are not overspending for only 500 foot coverage. There are many dehumidifiers that can go all the way up to 10,000 square feet without being too intrusive which is perfect for a mid-sized business warehouse. There are larger dehumidification systems available, but it is generally recommended that you just use more than one dehumidifier if you are looking for a space larger than 10,000 square feet. However, understand that if you want a quality dehumidifier you are not going to be able to get it for $100. However, there are some great deals out there for those that cover 1000 feet or more so if you shop around you can still find a good deal. We've seen industrial strength full metal dehumidifiers going for as low as $750 so there are still deals to be found on the internet. Expect that you are going to pay quite a bit more than that from the manufacturer themselves or an industrial supply store. That being said, there is still the option to get a whole building dehumidifier or dehumidification system which may be ideal for warehouses in areas that are always humid. These whole building dehumidifiers are very popular in IT data centers as well as moisture can do significant damage to servers if not kept under control. It'll be much harder to find a full dehumidification system for a business online, so you are probably much better hiring a company to come in and evaluate your business if you are looking to dehumidify more than 100,000 square feet.
There are some companies that specifically market towards industrial dehumidifiers, but they are few and far between so it is important that you research the company as well. However, this is not the only option. Many businesses prefer to just stack up on many residential dehumidifiers. For the same price as an industrial dehumidifier, in some cases you can get 5 or more residential dehumidifiers. Keep in mind that residential dehumidifiers are not designed to run at full strength 100% of the time so they will not last nearly as long. Plus the warranties are not going to be the same for a residential dehumidifier as they would be for an industrial dehumidifier. The parts will be made completely differently and you will typically get a much more solid metal machine with an industrial dehumidifier. If the dehumidifier is for a factory or warehouse then it is much more likely that an industrial dehumidifier will be the choice that needs to be made. However, for a small office a residential dehumidifier or a couple of them may work instead. Plus, you do not have the heavy power restrictions that you have with industrial strength dehumidifiers. But in businesses where dehumidification is critical, industrial dehumidifiers are really the only way to go.
Perhaps the most important reason to get an industrial dehumidifier is for places with possibilities of floods or places that have already experienced flood damage. A residential dehumidifier will bring the humidity level down low enough to kill mold if it is under 750 square feet or so for a quality mid sized dehumidifier, but it is not designed to handle floods or water spills. They can still take care of flood damage and prevent harmful mold and bacteria, but the amount of time needed to take care of the humidity problem is going to be significantly longer than an industrial dehumidifier. For the times when a flood or large spill needs to be taken care of very quickly, then industrial dehumidifiers are the preferred choice for taking care of the moisture problem. This is even true for residential use. Generally you would not want to buy an industrial strength dehumidifier to use in your house because of the excessive noise and power usage, but in flood damages cases it is highly recommended that you go out and buy or rent one immediately. This can save you tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in flood damage and is absolutely critical for those who do not have flood insurance. These industrial strength dehumidifiers can take the humidity out of the room in some cases fast enough to prevent black mold. The sooner you can get a dehumidifier up and running the better when it comes to these flood cases.
Dehumidifiers of all kinds can be incredibly helpful especially in moist areas. They are a very effective backup in case of flood damage as well. You should definitely pick one up as it will make your life so much more comfortable in areas where humidity can cause damage to industrial components. But like any other product, it is important to know what you are going to be using the product for and then purchase accordingly. If it is industrial strength dehumidifier that you need, then do not waste your time with residential dehumidifiers that are not going to take care of your problem. There are a variety of industrial dehumidifiers out there that will give you the power you need to handle excess moisture on a large scale.
