MaxxDry Renewable Mini-Dehumidifier

MaxxDry Renewable Mini-Dehumidifier

The MaxxDry Renewable Mini-Dehumidifier is a non-mechanical desiccation unit designed to help wick moisture from tight, confined spaces such as safes, cabinets, and so on. Its compact and inexpensive design makes it ideal for storage purposes, but this model will not be useful as a whole-house dehumidifier.

Appearance and Design

Weighing in at less than 2 pounds, the MaxxDry Renewable Mini-Dehumidifier resembles an alarm control panel or similar electronic device. Circular vents line the outside of a durable, white plastic case in order to draw in moisture, and a colored indicator line is easily visible on the front panel. The design of the MaxxDry is simple – silica beads inside the device will absorb up to 40% of their weight in airborne moisture, and when they are saturated simply plug the device into a wall socket and heat them up until the silica has regenerated.

Functionality and Use

While silica gel acts as a useful desiccant in many situations, it is limited in scope and shouldn’t be expected to function as a full-scale dehumidifier. The best uses for a product like the MaxxDry Renewable Mini-Dehumidifier are in small, mildly damp spaces that do not require too much moisture removal. The manufacturers recognize this, however, and the MaxxDry is not marketed for the same purposes as its dehumidifier cousins. It is a modest device, designed to keep paper and other valuables safe and dry in contained areas, and it appears to do this job quite well.

Model Limitations

As mentioned above, the MaxxDry Renewable Mini-Dehumidifier cannot be expected to perform the duties of a true mechanical dehumidifier. In addition, the dehumidification properties of silica gel are dubious at times; while silica gel beads definitely absorb moisture, they also release it when they are heated up during the regenerative process. So is moisture truly removed from the surrounding air, or simply temporarily displaced? That said, silica is commonly used for storage purposes, and will likely perform well when it comes to discouraging mold and mildew in spaces under 300 cubic feet.

Customer Service and Warranty

The inexpensive MaxxDry Renewable Mini-Dehumidifier retails for approximately $15 - $20, and is not sold with a factory or manufacturer warranty. As with most durable, inexpensive products, there is little need to guarantee the MaxxDry – in most cases it is difficult to receive a refund when a product breaks or malfunctions, and is only worth the effort when a substantial amount of money is involved. Customers dissatisfied with the MaxxDry would be best advised to purchase a new one or invest in a different model.

What Do Owners Say?

Unfortunately, the MaxxDry Renewable Mini-Dehumidifier has not received glowing customer reviews. It appears that part of this negativity has resulted from misunderstandings regarding the nature of the product. The MaxxDry is a silent, passive dehumidification device; it should not be plugged in until the silica gel requires regeneration. When it is plugged in, it will heat the silica gel – buyers should not expect a fan or other dehumidification function to kick in.

This little dehumidifier can be a great bargain for customers looking to purchase a silent, durable device for storage or cabinet space!
